Athletics at Portledge is a critical and unique part of the school community. We are committed to ensuring that every student who wishes to compete interscholastically in a particular sport will get that opportunity. Commitment to this principle recently led to the creation of Upper School JV teams in girls soccer, boys soccer, girls basketball and boys basketball as our enrollment expanded.
An emphasis on proper sportsmanship is also a fundamental principle of Portledge Athletics. All players, coaches and parents are asked to conduct themselves accordingly in their interactions with opposing players, coaches, officials and fans. This regard for sportsmanship is part of a larger process of commitment that is required from all athletes in all programs. Open and honest communication must be maintained between players and coaches, and coaches’ decisions regarding the granting of excused absences must be respected. In all cases, the good of the whole is weighed against individual benefit.
Over the last decade Portledge has broken new ground in the competitive level of its Middle and Upper School athletics. League championships, undefeated teams, NYSAISAA Tournament berths and significant individual accomplishments have recently been achieved in several sports. All of these accomplishments, however, are kept in the perspective of developing the true student-athlete. It is the hope of the Portledge Athletic Department that the positive atmosphere and environment created by the aforementioned principles will be a source of pride for the entire Portledge community.
