Portledge School maintains two library facilities for use by our entire community, as well as a satellite in the atrium of the Middle School for the convenience of students during their free time. The libraries are warm, inviting spaces which are conducive to learning, research and recreational reading. Consistent with the school philosophy, the Dunn Library in the Lower School building and the Gilmour Library in the Upper School each provide a welcome gathering place for reading and studying, successfully nurturing a community of lifelong learners.
The mission of the Portledge libraries, as guided by the Portledge School philosophy, is to provide access to information in its various forms and presentations; to support and enhance our academic curriculum and the professional development of our faculty; to foster the appreciation of literature and reading for pleasure in our student body; to provide instruction in electronic resources and the tools used to retrieve these materials; and to create a physical environment conducive to learning, study and research for all members of our school community. The professional staff of the libraries aims to develop information literacy skills and promote critical thinking in our students’ choice, retrieval and use of all information formats.
