Imani Winds
Portledge students participate in Music and perform at every school level, beginning with classroom instruction and singing in Lower School.  Instrumental lessons commence in grade 4, and performance groups are formed in middle school.  Chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Combo and Orchestra are offered in Upper School, along with a rotation of academic music classes including AP Music Theory.  Student performances are highlighted on campus with winter and spring concerts.  Off campus, lower and middle school musicians annually entertain local senior citizens while the upper school chorus aids Champions for Charity.  Instrumental and vocal ensembles performed this spring at community events celebrated by Planting Fields and Bailey's Arboretum.

Portledge has a tradition of exposing students to the larger music world.  Lower School classes "Meet the Artist" at Lincoln Center while middle and upper school students are treated to professional performance ensembles that have included the Calder Quartet, the Imani Winds, David Wiley of the Long Island Philharmonic, the Manhattan Brass, and Sweet Plantain.  This year will feature a Klezmer performance.

At Portledge, upper school students may enter a planned program of study to earn the designation of Arts Scholar on graduation. The music department is equipped with a MIDI lab, and its teachers are members of NMEA (Nassau Music Educators Association), LISFA (Long Island String Festival Association) and MENC (the National Association for Music Education), giving students access to NYSSMA, All-County, LISFA, All-State, and All-Eastern Festivals.
