The Portledge Varsity Lacrosse team honored ten graduating seniors, Matt Sullivan, Zach Cooper-Vastola, Joey Brambil, Andrew Reiter, David Hirsch, Jake Horton, Jesse Schandler and captains, Ben Fortgang, Nick Lobley and Zack Pilson, before Saturday's final regular season home game vs. Rye Country Day. Varsity Boys Head Coach and Portledge Director of Athletics, Mr. Hills, spoke about the great commitment that these players made to Portledge Lacrosse over their years at the school. The Panthers went on to lose a hard fought game to the Rye Country Day Wildcats by a score of 7-5. Junior goaltender Ted Haggerty had an amazing game between the pipes as he turned away 22 RCD shots and ran a smooth clear all day long. The Panthers last regular season game was on the road at Long Island Lutheran on Wednesday.
The Young Alumni Brunch was held on Wednesday. Members of the Class of 2012 first posed for two class pictures (one inside and one outside) wearing their college shirts. Then, everyone walked to Stoddart House for brunch. Afterwards, Mr. Hahn, Mr. Lewis and Alumni Association President, Keith Merker ’89, Princeton ’93, said a few words about the importance of staying involved with the school and Portledge alumni. At the end, everyone signed the alumni register and received their class gift.
Student Council Elections were held during Town Meeting this week. Congratulations to Mrs. Oehrlein for winning the George Lenchner Distinguished Service Award longstanding service to Nassau County Interscholastic Math League. For the third consecutive year, the Portledge team received an award for placing within the top 25 teams among the 154 teams in the county. The following students also received awards based on their scores from the six meets held during the year. Gold Pins: Yida Xin ‘13, Allison Herzig ‘12 and Stefan Hamaway ‘12; Silver Pins: Nicole Hamaway ‘14, Neil Nelanuthala ‘13 and Jennifer Ferrante’13; and Patch: Evan Solomon ’13.
Congratulations to Naseer Muhammad ’15 for winning the library drawing. Mr. Nelson picked his name out of a hat with others who completed his on-line survey.
