The Early Childhood program at Portledge School focuses on the development of the whole child. Classrooms are organized to support the social, emotional, language and cognitive development of every student.
Young children construct knowledge through developmentally appropriate everyday activities and experiences that allow for hands-on exploration and use authentic materials. These experiences provide the foundation for understanding major academic concepts in literacy, math, science and community. Problem solving, decision-making, risk-taking, independence, self-help skills, and awareness of the needs of others are all developed while children learn about themselves and the world around them in a child-centered school environment.
The Early Childhood program strives to help each child grow, flourish individually, and make strong connections with peers and the greater school community. The program provides a bridge between home and school through parent and family involvement in class activities, assemblies and all-school events, as well as parent education and discussion groups on topics relating to young children.
In order to provide children with the best chance for enjoying success and accommodate family needs, Portledge School offers extended day programming for nursery aged students three days each week and for pre-Kindergarten students five days each week. Once in Kindergarten, students attend school five full days each week.
