French instruction begins in Kindergarten with emphasis on the spoken language and the study of French culture. Reading begins with word recognition and the identification of objects, songs, and poetry. Formal writing begins in fourth grade. The curriculum is based on oral communication, and the focus is on the child's environment. Activities include games, role-play, and hands-on activities. Third graders perform in an annual French Assembly, such as “Le Petit Prince” en françois.
