In Art 6 students reinforce their basic drawing skills. In sculpture classes students develop a broader perspective on art as they work with new materials such as wax and also create environmental art. In woodworking, students explore a variety of woodworking techniques from traditional carving through computer-based bridge and automobile design.
In Art 7 students increase their vocabulary of elements and principle, and their understanding of the concepts behind process. The ability to critique and to be critiqued is an important aspect of the course. Students develop criteria for evaluating art and gain a personal aesthetic. Students also study digital photography, focusing on composition and the techniques of photo manipulation.
Students in Art 8 create a variety of two and three dimensional projects that reflect the work of specific artists or the art movement they represent. Students have the opportunity to mentor 1st grade partners during a specially designed field trip to a major art museum.
Student art works are displayed throughout the building and highlighted during the winter and spring art exhibitions. Student work is also visible on the Portledge School website. An “Artist of the Month” is recognized at gatherings of the whole middle school, and the artist’s work hangs in the building in a designated area for the duration of the period.
