Portedge girls’ tennis served up a first in winning the 2011 inaugural PSSA girls’ tennis championship. In defeating Staten Island Academy 3 - 2, the girls avenged an earlier defeat to that competitive team. They hung tough after dropping the first two singles matches, then roared back, winning third singles and both doubles matches. This bespoke the entire fall season, with the girls nearly pulling off a double championship, only to lose a rematch to Kew Forest, 3-2 in the IPPSAL championship. The 12 – 5 season proved once again Portledge dominance in a sport where the 23-girl team supported each other through thick and thin. Special commendation goes to the seniors who led the team all the way: Co-captains Lisa Dourmashkin and Jessie Sarkis, and Rachael Scheinman, Allison Herzig, Jessie Song, and Jessica Trombatore .

Portledge girls tennis dropped an IPPSAL match to Kew Forest today, 5 - 0. Losing effprts in all three singles matches saw, Sophia Barnard '13, Julia Khan '15, and Sarah Sklar '15 giving it their all. Sophia lost 8 - 4 against a highly ranked player; Julia, in her first Portledge match, lost 8 - 1 to an experienced senior; and Sklar lost 8 - 3 to another experienced player. In fact, all three Kew girls, as well as two doubles players, had played on the coed Kew tennis team last spring. Those Kew doubles opponents outdueled our girls, 8-6 in first doubles and 8 - 1 in second doubles. With co-captain Jessie Sarkis '12 out with an injured ankle, young Dasha Dlin '17 filled in with Lisa Dourmashkin '12 in a 1st doubles match that saw the Portledge duo come back from being 5 - 1 down, to tie the score at 6 games each, only to drop the next two. Also in second doubles, newcomers Eve Shapiro '13 and Leah Zafra '16 struggled in vain. Experience is the best teacher for these young Panthers. Just wait til the rematch is their cry. |
