It is the general policy of the Gilmour Library that our computers are to be used in a responsible, efficient, ethical and legal manner in accordance with the mission of Portledge School. Students must acknowledge their understanding of the general policy and guidelines as a condition of using the library network. Use of the Gilmour Library computer network is a privilege, not a right. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in disciplinary action or suspension of library privileges.
Acceptable uses of the network are activities which support learning and access to information, including the library’s OPAC, software programs and Internet resources. Students may access their personal email accounts on the library’s computers. At all times, students should be mindful of other patrons waiting to use the available computers, and should resort to their personal laptops for functions which do not require access to the library network.
Unacceptable uses of the network include, but are not limited to:
• Violating the rights to privacy of students or faculty members, or others outside of the Portledge community
• Using profanity, obscenity, or other language which may be offensive to another user.
• Copying materials in violation of copyright law.
• Plagiarizing, or presenting someone else's words, ideas, or theories as your own without properly giving credit to their source.
• Attempting to degrade or disrupt system performance, or unauthorized entry to computer systems and files.
• Accessing, downloading, storing, or printing programs, files or messages that are sexually explicit, obscene, or that offend or tend to degrade others. This includes (but is not limited to) downloading desktop images for monitors, and downloading, installing or using games and Internet Messaging programs. The library invokes its discretionary right to determine such suitability.
• Using the library network for financial gain or for any commercial or illegal activity.
