"The term 'school man' gets used so frequently and maybe indiscriminately by those of us who love school life that it can lose its impact. But when I look at David Hoyler and a career in education that spans over 40 years, with 30 of those years at one school, Portledge, being a 'school man' takes on both symbolic and real meaning" ~ Steven Hahn, June 6, 2010
"What a wonderful reception! For an educator there is no better mix of people than parents, students, colleagues, and family getting together to share in the joy of education. I was deeply touched by and appreciative of the out-pouring of love. Simultaneusly, however, we have to remember that it is no single person who makes a difference as much as it is the synergistic effect of the efforts of all those involved. I have been so fortunate to have been involved with so many people who are committed to education." ~ David Hoyler, June 9, 2010

CJ PAPA'S SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION TO PHIL FALINO I first had the opportunity to visit Portledge a few months ago when I was reporting that your school was named the MSG Varsity Outreach Partner of the Week – what struck me then were your students – everyone was very helpful in showing us around the school — and your willingness to share your story with me made my job so much easier.
During this time I also had the opportunity to work with Phil Falino. As you know, Phil has been the president of the school’s MSG Varsity club this inaugural season. Phil has worked behind the scenes telling and sharing the great stories of Portledge.
He has also worked with underclassmen throughout the year; assisting them with shooting techniques and editing a majority of the pieces that the school has submitted to MSG Varsity throughout the year.
Phil is a student that embodies the spirit of MSG Varsity – demonstrating the community, leadership, friendship, teamwork and camaraderie that make high schools such dynamic places.
It is my pleasure to present the MSG Varsity Scholarship to Phil Falino. We wish you the best of luck at NYU this fall. Congratulations. BRAVO, ONE AND ALL!

Patricia Hambrook, MS English faculty member and MS & US Theater faculty member, directed her students in this spirited production. In the words of Jaques in As You Like It:
All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages.
Blue White Day, held on Friday, May 28, 2010 - a fantastic way to usher in the Memorial Day weekend - was the ultimate display of Portledge School spirit.
Beginning with the dedication of the Peace Pole, the morning continued with dynamic performances at the Upper School talent show. Heartfelt farewells to Mr. Hoyler and his reading of Winnie the Pooh were indeed highlights of the talent show.
Moving on to a parade of Lower Schoolers led by the Portledge Panther mascot, athletic competitions followed, pitting Blue and White teams from all three divisions in friendly competition.
Following a delicious BBQ prepared and served by the dedicated staff of Culinart, it was time for the annual yearbook ceremony. This year's yearbook is dedicated to departing Upper School Head, David Hoyler, who devoted the last 30 years to his Portledge students. A moving ceremony recognized Mr. Hoyler and two faculty members leaving Portledge - Nicholas Woll (fourth grade) and Carolyn Slanetz Chiu "85 (Upper School science) - as well as US Registrar, Karen Checca. All will be missed.
With the distribution of yearbooks, the day came to a close...a day to remember for the great fun and the lasting memories it provided.

The Art Department held a special Town Meeting in the form of a “mock” art auction on May 27th involving Mr. Greene’s Art 9 students and all the Middle School students.
The Art 9 students prepared for this event after a semester of learning about four historic art movements. Along with studying the historical factors, each student is asked to paint a copy of a master work from one of the assigned movements being studied. Students then work in small groups to create oral presentations along with individual papers based on specific artists connected to each movement.
Once this work is accomplished, all the paintings created by the students are put on exhibit in the Middle School Meshel Gallery and voted upon by the Middle School students and faculty. This voting process determines which works will move on to the actual mock “auction” event. Two works of art are chosen to represent each movement.
On the day of the auction, the art works were placed on the stage in Bahnik Hall. This allowed individual advisee groups to view the works during the silent bidding Art 9 students, dressed up in character as the individual artists give an historical overview of the art movement being presented prior to the actual bidding. Each advisee group bid between $50,000 (minimum bid) to up $100,000 (maximum bid) per picture per art movement. The bids were recorded silently on paper after the presentation of each art movement.
After lively discussion within individual advisee groups, bids were recorded and collected by the art department for review. The object of the bidding is to “acquire” the most art works given the budget available. The art department established a clear winner following based on which group acquires the most works of art (based on bidding results) from the art movements presented.
