Dear Middle School Students and Parents,
The English Department has been working all year to review our Summer Reading Assignment. We have solicited student opinion with regard to book choices, and we have generated an exciting list of reading selections. Our primary goal for this assignment is twofold: to integrate the summer reading selections more closely into the actual curriculum and to afford students a learning experience rather than merely a testing experience. Please read the following instructions carefully.

As in years past, books have been grouped into two categories: “Required” and “Recommended.” The “Required” books have been selected for their relevance to the curriculum and will be discussed in class. In order to ensure consistent pagination, we have included the ISBN numbers for each of these titles. The “Recommended” books have been chosen on the basis of either teacher or student recommendation. We have tried to eliminate selections which had become stale or unpopular. All the titles are annotated to guide the student in making selections.

All students in grades 6 – 8 must read both books on the “Required” lists below. Additionally, each student must read two books either from the “Recommended” list or of equal literary merit.

No essay assignment will be required during the summer. Students will discuss their “Required” books in class. Students will also be guided in writing annotations for their remaining two summer reading books. To prepare for these class activities students are required to take brief notes on character, setting, plot, and theme as they read each book. Use this worksheet.

Summer is an excellent time for parents and their children to read and discuss books together. We hope this summer reading assignment provides enjoyment for your family.
