Date: Saturday, March 31, 2012
Time: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Portledge School, 355 Duck Pond Road, Locust Valley - Lower School
Portledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center are proud to co-sponsor the Second Create Something GreatSM Recycled Sculpture Contest. This contest is a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists across Long Island (in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade) to pique their curiosity about art, wildlife and environmental issues. Students are encouraged to build sculptures designed around the theme of nocturnal animals, such as bats, fireflies, owls, raccoons, skunks, hermit crabs and tarantulas, made out of recycled and/or reusable materials.
The general public is invited to view all sculptures which will be on display. Award winners will be announced in three assigned age categories based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials. All participants in attendance will be recognized and receive a certificate.
Following the awards reception, wildlife experts from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will do an up close and personal “meet and greet” with nocturnal animals. Instructors from Portledge Summer Adventures will offer hands-on science and arts & crafts activities for children of all ages.
This event is free and open to the public.
Afterwards, award winning sculptures will be transported to the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center for a second art display April 2nd – April 6th, open to the public noon – 4 p.m.
