Community Service Shines Through at Portledge

Portledge School is giving back to the local community and beyond through its community service efforts. Everyone from pre-nursery through grade 12 has been involved with projects throughout the first four months of the school year. Some of the efforts include:

  • Operation Christmas Child, through which donations of toiletries, school supplies and toys were collected for young children (ages 5-9) and packed into over 40 shoe boxes, which were sent to children in the United States and abroad
  • School-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive generated over 600 non-perishable items and fifteen turkeys, and a Holiday Toy Drive, which collected hundreds of toys for kids of all ages, to support the Inter-Religious and Human Needs Council in Oyster Bay
  • Lower School Book Drive collected over 1,500 children’s books for Margaretville, NY, a town that was devastated from the August hurricane
  • Holiday cards for the soldiers abroad with over 100 cards sent from students in the Lower School and the Upper School Community Service Club
  • UNICEF collection in all three divisions during Halloween generated over $600
  • Homeless Lunch Bake Sales, with proceeds used to provide bagged lunches to the guests of the North Shore Sheltering Program in Glen Cove twice a month from December through March
  • Garbage collection on local roads in Locust Valley, with the first outing gathering ten bags in an hour
  • Coat Drive collected nearly 100 coats in the Lower School alone, through the efforts of the Portledge Girl Scout Troop comprised of kindergarten through third graders

Whether the students participate in the Community Service Club, Student Council, Green Team, class activities or pursue the community service work on their own, such as a charity walk, students at Portledge constantly give back.
