Portledge School recently held its two Winter Concerts & Art Exhibitions as well as its annual Lower School Holiday Play. The Upper School Concertshowcased the Flute Ensemble, Senior Concert Band Ensemble, Upper School Chorus, Orchestra, Concert Band, and the Portledge Jazz Combo. The beautiful Art Exhibition featured works from Advanced Portfolio, Ceramics, Studio Art, Media 1 and 2, and Sculpture. The Middle School Winter Concert included performances from the Sixth Grade Singers, Middle School Chorus, Grade 6 Orchestra, 7-8 Orchestra, Grade 6 Band, and 7-8 Band. The artwork on display was from the Art 6, Art 7, Art 8, Woodworking 6, and Woodworking 7 classes. The music and art departments certainly had a terrific forum to highlight the talents of the Portledge students.
The Lower School Holiday Play this year was “Beauty and the Beast.” The fourth graders had the leading roles while the first, second, third and fifth grade classes had supporting parts in which they each performed a grade-wide song at some point during the hour and a half-long play. Drama teacher, Deni Cavrell, directed the play with the assistance of music teacher, Maureen Husing; fourth grade teacher, Leslie Lemma; and Chris Kelly, choreographer. A number of parents also assisted with the set and costume design: Valerie Yardeni, Margherita Yoder, Inez Ransolin, Sue Prior, Giselle Turner The countless hours paid off making the production such a huge success; one good enough for Broadway!
Visual, musical and performing arts play a major role In a Portledge education, and these three divisional events truly brought the Portledge community together during the joyous holiday season.
