Portledge students participate in Music and perform at every school
level, beginning with classroom instruction and singing in Lower
School, adding instrumental lessons from grade 4 on, and performance
groups in the Middle School. At the Upper School level, Chorus, Concert
Band, Jazz Combo and Orchestra are offered along with a rotation
of academic music classes, including AP Music Theory. Students may
enter a planned program of study to earn the designation of Arts
Scholar on graduation. Portledge is equipped with a MIDI lab, and
its teachers are members of NMEA (Nassau Music Educators Association)
and MENC (the National Association for Music Education), giving students
access to NYSSMA, All-County, All-State, and All-Eastern Festivals.
