Athletics are viewed as integral to a well-rounded education, with character, camaraderie, leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship stressed at all grade levels.
Physical Education – Lower School
In pre-kindergarten through fourth grade physical education
classes focus on the development of physical coordination and conditioning,
individual team sport skills, good sportsmanship and enjoyment
in participation. Students meet several times a week with physical
education instructors.
Middle School – Intramural/Interscholastic
In the fifth through eighth grades opportunities are
made available for the students to participate in intramural or
interscholastic programs in a number of individual and team sports.
The fifth and sixth grade athletic program begins with an emphasis
on skill development and intramural play and eventually grows into
interscholastic competition through a series of play dates with
other area schools. The seventh and eighth grade teams compete
in an interscholastic league with most team sport seasons consisting
of ten to twelve games. Practices are held during the school day
from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and all games are scheduled after school
Monday through Thursday.
Upper School- Physical Education/Intramural/Interscholastic|
In the ninth through twelfth grades, each student is
required to complete three seasons of athletics each year. This
requirement may be met by participation in physical education classes,
which take place three times a week during the school day, or in
an intramural program, or on an interscholastic team. Intramural
programs and interscholastic teams in the Upper School meet five
to six times a week with most practices taking place from 3:45
pm to 5:15 pm. Upper School interscholastic games are scheduled
either after school Monday through Friday or on Saturdays. A table
of Middle and Upper School intramural and interscholastic teams
is located below.
Portledge recognizes the participation of its students in competitive and/or rigorous athletic pursuits outside the school by granting, at the discretion of the Athletic Director, athletic exemptions to such students. Students may apply for one season of athletic exemption each year, except in cases involving special circumstances when a second season may be granted.
