Dear Parents,

As you know by now, we have adopted Everyday Mathematics for Grade Pre-K through 6. Teachers and children have begun using this research-based curriculum and we are enthusiastic about what we have seen so far. We are learning different ways of talking about math, and of looking at how children solve problems using different algorithms. In simplest terms, an algorithm is a specific series of steps that will give you the correct answer every time.

In Everyday Mathematics, children first learn to understand the mathematics behind the problems they solve. They then frequently come up with their own unique working algorithms demonstrating that they “get it” while discovering that there is more than one algorithm (or method) for computing answers to problems. Our program includes a variety of standard computational algorithms as well as children’s invented procedures. The program leads children through three phases as they learn each mathematical operation, including Algorithm Invention and Alternative Algorithms. In the third phase, called Demonstration of Proficiency, children are expected be able to demonstrate, with proficiency, one “focus” algorithm which provides them with a common and consistent language. Once they can reliably use the focus algorithm, children may use it or any alternative they prefer when solving problems, ensuring that all children know at least one reliable method for each operation, while promoting flexibility.

If you would like to learn more about this program, please join us for a Math Workshop for Parents on Tuesday, October 28, beginning at 7 p.m. in Bahnik Hall. Additional copies of the reference book will be available for purchase at the meeting if you wish to purchase a copy to keep at home. I also invite you to browse the Parent’s Homeroom at www.everydaymath.uchicago.edu to become better acquainted with the math games that are a key component of basic skills.

As you can tell, we are excited about the adoption of this program and feel confident that Everyday Mathematics will be an engaging, enriching and successful experience for our children.

Best,

Lisa Cermak
