The NY Islanders Visit Lower School!

On Wednesday, January 30th, members of the NY Islanders Hockey Club came to visit our K-5 Lower School students as part of the NY Islanders School Assembly Program. The LS Gym was filled with excitement as Jon Sandos ‘03, Director of Athletics, introduced our visitors to the stage. The fan favorite was the blue and orange dragon, otherwise known as Sparky, the Islander’s team mascot. The assembly included a video presentation on the many charitable efforts made by the famous organization, a discussion on teamwork, and a fun demonstration.
Three lucky Portledge students were picked to participate in an exercise that illustrated the importance of teamwork. By working together Cristian Berretta ‘28, Charles Brita ‘27, and Lyla Fentin ‘27 were able to work efficiently and foster friendship. They went on to define teamwork as what people do when they work together, supporting, encouraging, and collaborating to learn or achieve a common goal.

They also shared many of the ways the Islanders support Long Island communities philanthropically with team effort underscoring the importance of kindness and helping others. They talked about how the Islander team is made up of people from all over the world with many differences: languages, beliefs, religions, experiences, and backgrounds, with an emphasis on how their shared differences make their team stronger; just like our school.
