Baines '22 makes Portledge Basketball History

Portledge School 8th grader Zaire Baines makes Portledge School history and lands himself on the list of high school players with the highest single-game scoring output in Long Island boys and girls basketball history.
Last night, Portledge 8th grader Zaire Baines scored 53 points vs. PSAA opponent Kew Forest, breaking a school record of most points scored by one player in a game. Baines ’22 had shots falling early, scoring 14 of the team’s first 16 points. His domination continued and by half time he had more than half of Portledge’s points under his belt. As Kew Forest attempted to stop him by double and even triple teaming him at times, Baines ’22 distributed the ball to his teammates, and knowing how hot his hands were during the game, his teammates passed the ball back and watched him let it fly. Baines ’22 continued to frustrate Kew Forest by making 3-point shots from 3-feet behind the arc. Zaire’s attitude and energy throughout the game was felt by his teammates who rallied behind him, and when he took his final 3-pointer of the game the entire team went wild on the bench, standing and cheering on their teammate who had just made history.

Not only did Baines ’22 break a Portledge School record, but also put himself at #20 on Newsday’s list of high school players with the highest single-game scoring output in Long Island boys and girls basketball history. This is an incredible accomplishment for a young player and we can’t wait to see what he continues to achieve throughout his career at Portledge School.
