This Spring the Portledge Athletic Department retired the soccer jersey of Marissa Stanco ‘18. Stanco ‘18 wore # 21 during her four years at Portledge School and not only contributed to the girls soccer program, but athletics at Portledge as a whole, which earned her the Senior Athletic Award. Her soccer career was unprecedented at Portledge as Marissa led the Girls Soccer team to four consecutive PSAA championships, was awarded four consecutive PSAA Regular Season Most Valuable Player Awards, and three PSAA Playoff Most Valuable Player Awards. Marissa set a host of Portledge records including 121 career points, 89 career goals, and 32 career assists. If you ever attended a Girls Soccer game there is a strong chance that one of her incredible plays brought you to your feet with gasps.

However, it is not only statistics that measure this player’s impact on Portledge Soccer. As her senior season approached, she faced tremendous pressure from her travel organization, potential college coaches, and many advisers to give up her school team to focus on the more rigorous training provided by academy level soccer. After several tough weeks of wrestling with the dilemma, she realized that her commitment to her Portledge teammates and coaches, as well as to the school in general, was simply too much to sacrifice. So there she was the first day of pre-season in August 2017, with a big smile and a dedication to win a fourth championship. Making these types of difficult life decisions is what marks true character, and what makes all of us so proud to have Marissa be part of Portledge Athletics. Congratulations to Marissa Stanco and her family as we retire the number 21 in Varsity Girls Soccer at Portledge forever!

In August, Marissa will continue her soccer career at Fordham University. We thank you Marissa for all you have done for Athletics at Portledge, especially the Girls Soccer team, and we wish you all the best as you continue your soccer career in the Fall.
