After School Adventures

Portledge After School Adventures welcomes Portledge and non-Portledge students to attend our programs. 

The classes offered include sports, arts, science, hobbies, and many learning opportunities. Through this program, we hope to provide a time for children to learn new things, engage in a hobby they love, spend time with friends, or try something new. After School Adventures is just one way that Portledge works to meet the needs of our students and their families. After School Adventures meet Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. and are open to students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. 

Winter After School Adventures runs from January 22nd - March 4th, 2019.

  • CrossFit Kids

    Join Mr. Wingler for CrossFit Kids!! Based on Greg Glassman’s principle of Mechanics, Consistency and then Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translate to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.  CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for all ages. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, creating an opportunity to be physically fit and physically active throughout their lives.

  • Fresh Made Chinese by ME

    This hands-on cooking class will teach you some cooking techniques and kitchen safety while preparing recipes that we are sure to enjoy while building confidence in the kitchen. We will also explore new fruits, vegetables, herbs, and more. This program is not only a cooking class but also a Chinese culture immersion course. Each class ends with a meal shared together.

  • Storybook Theatre


    Join Mainstages for an engaging new program that will explore multicultural stories through movement, puppetry and dramatic play. Participants become cunning tricksters, majestic animals, and brave heroes as they journey to the ends of their imagination. Participants begin to build skills in the basics of character and plot development. At program’s end, participants will perform a demonstration including improvised exercises, group theater games, and sketches.

  • Board Game Fun with Miss Losco

    Everyone loves board games, but who has the time? This fun new class will give your child the opportunity to learn to strategize, compete, play all kinds of traditional board games, and have fun with friends and fellow classmates. Games of all ages will be played including Twister, Battleships, Candy Land, card games, Uno, and more.

  • Fashion Design

    Children will enjoy this fashion design class using fabrics with various textures, colors, patterns and embellishments to create exciting designs of their own using stencils.  No sewing is involved in this class design only. Children will learn about various designers, labels and how to create a logo as well. One class will be devoted to embellishing a piece of clothing from their own closet. Come to check out this fun, new, creative class.

  • Kinder-Ballet

    Kinder-Ballet is created for students entering Kindergarten. This class incorporates creative movement with pre-ballet. Students in this level are introduced to more formal ballet training including barre work. They continue to explore ballet terminology, both audibly and visually.

  • Chess

    In this course, students will learn basic chess strategies. They will gain an understanding of chess notation and the most important rules to use during each phase of the game. Class time is split between instruction and game playing giving students an opportunity to apply newly learned strategies.

  • Badminton

    Come and learn the sport of Badminton.  Join Guyanese singles and doubles champion, Mr. Barnwell for Badminton instruction and fun.  The class will begin with a warm-up and continue with skill lessons integrated with fun game style instruction. Students will engage in games such as Rob the Nest, King of the Court and relay races to improve eye-hand coordination, racket skills and much more.

  • Lego Building for Fun

    Lego Creation is about the fun and creativity of Legos while learning the basics of architecture and engineering. Every week, kids will embark on a new project using a huge collection of Legos that will test their building skills such as building a pyramid or working together to build a city or a mega tower. Kids will expand their creativity while figuring out ways to bring their imaginations to life. You can build anything if you put your mind to it!

  • Lego Robotics

    In this afterschool course, students will program and design their very own robot to do a variety of tasks. From races, mazes to Sumo wrestling, students will design and build their robot with Legos and also create the challenges their robots will face with Legos. Both creative and scientific, this very engaging course should challenge and inspire all aspiring Lego creators, programmers, and roboticists.

  • Tennis

    Coaches from Robbie Wagner's Tournament Training Center will join us this season at Portledge. This interactive class will take place in the gym and will provide lessons for the youngsters in a fun and familiar atmosphere where they are surrounded by their friends. Our professionally trained instructors and our Junior pros will provide all the equipment necessary to teach your youngsters in a fun and safe environment. All the children need are sneakers, comfortable clothes, and the willingness to learn.

  • Building Fun

    Join Ms. Losco for building and construction fun.  Children will plan, build and construct with a variety of materials including, tubes, blocks, Magna-tiles, clay, cardboard and more.
    This is a great way to build thinking skills, problem-solving, planning, and fine motor skills.

  • Pre-Ballet/Creative Movement

    This class is designed to promote a child’s coordination and motor skills as well as introduce basic beginner ballet skills.
