The Portledge Coffeehouse

In October 2023, our Portledge students illuminated Bahnik Hall night with their exceptional talent, boundless curiosity, unwavering support, and infectious good cheer for one another at the third installment of the Coffeehouse!

For those unacquainted with the tradition, we host at least two "Portledge Coffeehouses" each year, gathering students in an open-mic setting. It's an opportunity for students from all grades and social circles to showcase hidden talents that their peers might not have known existed. In October, the stage saw pianists, vocalists, and collaborative duets, and all were met with resounding applause. In attendance were students supporting their peers, faculty, administrators, and their children, some of whom described it as "the next best thing to attending a Broadway show!"

This event is designed exclusively for our students to explore and develop their talents in a supportive, judgment-free environment. The fact that virtually every student seems to be incredibly talented is just an added bonus!

What continues to astonish the Dean Team is the remarkable enthusiasm and encouragement our students offer one another. They bestow invaluable confidence upon their peers, helping them stand a little taller and to be seen as more complete individuals by their friends and teachers. As one teacher eloquently put it, "this is the best night of the year!"

The true testament to the evening's success came when our 10th-grade Student Council Co-President asked, "When is the next coffeehouse?" I replied, "January 26th! Start practicing now!" His response? "Can I ask one more question? Why can't it be sooner?"

And that says it all. We, as the Dean Team, can’t fully express our gratitude for our amazing students and for their parents, who give us the opportunity to share in their extraordinary talents.
