Portledge in the Now.

School Closures & Delays

This winter has already proven to be "snowier" than recent years. Therefore, please review all of our inclement weather policies below. This information will also be available on the parent Resource Board in myPortledge, or you can bookmark this link
School Closures and Delays
In the event of a snow day, Portledge will notify you via email, text, and phone calls through our emergency broadcast system. There will also be a banner on the website's homepage and myPortledge, and we will list our closing on News12 Long Island. We will notify the community by 6 a.m. on that day at the absolute latest.

The calendar provides room for one ‘grace’ snow day. After one snow day, instruction will continue online if there is another weather-related campus closure. Division directors have shared this information with teachers and students. Please be prepared to switch to online instruction after one snow day. **In the Lower School, homeroom teachers will communicate directly with parents and use Google Classroom for grades 1-5. Early Childhood families will hear from Mrs. DeMaria with specific instructions.

If there is a two-hour delay, students are expected to arrive by 10:20 a.m., and faculty and staff are expected to arrive by 9:50 a.m. or 30 minutes before their first class. At 10:20 a.m., all Middle and Upper School students should report to the classes that appear on their myPortledge schedules. Periods will be shortened, but all classes and advisories will meet in the order in which they usually would. Lower School and Early Childhood students should report to Homeroom, at which point the teachers will manage the day’s schedules with the students.

Afterschool Activities and Athletics
If inclement weather begins during the day and we expect hazardous travel conditions after 3:30 p.m., we will notify families by 11 a.m. if we cancel after-school activities, athletics practices, and/or games. If circumstances change after 11 a.m., we will notify families immediately,

Mid-Day Early Closure
Families will be informed as soon as possible regarding arrangements in the unlikely event of a mid-day school closure.

Transportation and Excused Absences
If you take your district bus to Portledge, and the district for your bus is on a two-hour delay, but Portledge is not, your bus will still pick you up at the delayed time. You will not receive any academic penalty for being late. If you take the bus, and that district cancels after-school transportation, and Portledge does not cancel after-school activities, you will not be penalized for missing an athletic event. Please notify the Athletics Department if this happens. If Portledge is on a delay and your bus’s school district is not, or if your bussing district has a snow day and Portledge does not, please be prepared to find an alternate method of transportation for your child. However, if alternate transportation means are unavailable, students will not be penalized for missing school.

We also understand that those not living locally may have different weather conditions in your neighborhood. If it is unsafe to travel to Portledge because of conditions local to your neighborhood, you will not receive an academic penalty for your absence.

**Teachers should inform their directors as soon as possible if they cannot attend school due to inclement weather in their neighborhood.

Thank you,
Simon Owen-Williams
