Portledge in the Now.

Recap

It was another nail bitter at Beaver Dam Monday night as the Portledge boys ice hockey team faced a solid Rye Country Day School squad. The game was full of hits right from the puck drop. The most gruesome and painful one came in the middle of the 1st frame when Portledge freshman, Spence Evans, who is a big kid in his own right, was on the bad end of a vicious hit by a huge RCDS defender. Spence was taken out of the game due to a massive cut over his left eye that would not close up. Evans however, returned to school the next day and will be ready for the Panthers first league game Wednesday at La Salle. Bodies would continue to be thrown as both net minders kept the game locked at 0-0. The 1st and decisive goal came in the early stages of the second period off a RCDS stick that just got passed goalie Vincent Salgado. Portledge had the hopes sucked out of them as freshman, Declan Conway, appeared to even the game up in the early moments of the 3rd period. The refs would beg to differ as they did not see the shot go in. I spoke with Conway after the game about the “no goal”, “ You know I’m certain that I buried the puck. There were 2 signs that showed that I lit up the red light. First everyone stopped playing which shows that both sides agree it was a goal. Second the goalie put his head back in defeat which is a pretty good indicator of a good goal.” Oh those Beaver Dam nets are so tight.  Declan wasn’t the only Panther unhappy about the game. I caught up with coach Jon Sandos after the contest and he said, “ We didn't put enough effort into it and we weren’t focused.” When asked about Portledge’s away game at La Salle on Wednesday Sandos told me, “ I’m fully confident the boys will have a bounce back game.” A bounce back game they need as Portledge looks to defeat a league opponent in their league opener on Wednesday.
