Portledge in the Now.

Recap

It was the Boys varsity hockey team in action today at Beaver Dam. It was a freezing but great day for hockey as the Portledge Panthers squared off against Morristown-Beard. It wasn't the outcome the boys were looking for as they dropped the game 4-2. The Panthers roared from the start with composed defense and a somewhat strong attack. The boys started off very disciplined. The Panthers struck first with Junior and Northeastern commit Ross Mitton who neted a gem off a nice move going to the goal. The boys continued their style of play until Sophomore and Harvard commit Marshal Warren put in an absolute beauty that just ticked off the crossbar and in giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead heading into the dressing room. When asked about the mood of the team after the first frame, coach Jon Sandos, said, “It was positive. We thought we did some nice things in the first period, we thought we controlled the puck very well we also talked about some adjustments in our defense and our neutral zone play.” It was a totally different hockey game in the 2nd period with the momentum taking a huge swing towards the Morristown-Beard team as they put in 3 goals, one with 4.1 seconds left in the period. When I asked Sandos about the very different second period he said, “We talked a lot about attacking and getting people and pucks to the net. I don’t think we created enough offense and traffic in front of the net I think the goalie had too many clean looks. We tried to execute that but as the final result showed we didn’t do a good enough job with that.” One of the biggest moments of the third period was when Mitton was hit by a Morristown-Beard defensemen causing Mitton to go out for a few minutes. The brutal collision badly bruised Mitton’s hip. The status of his injury is unknown but we hope he’s okay. The final from Beaver Dam, 4-2 Morristown-Beard.
