Lower School News May 19th

Bronx Zoo Field Trip
On May 7, the 4th and 5th graders visited the Bronx Zoo. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and a wonderful day. Two of the most exciting parts of the trip were riding the tram around the Asian/African area of the zoo to view animals and the gorilla exhibit - the gorillas really put on a show for us, and we could see them up very close.

Annual Poetry Assembly
The annual Lower School poetry assembly was held on May 8. The children are always proud to share their work, and we have many talented poets! We would like to thank our students, teachers, and the literacy committee for all their hard work throughout April to bring poetry into all our lives and spaces on campus. We were all delightfully surprised when the 3rd grade class shared a poem/song they wrote in library class with Mrs. Maguire that they then put music in Mr. Schwartz’s class. Their beautiful song about Portledge will likely become a regular tradition for singing at Lower School Assemblies and beyond. Please enjoy the poems the students wrote included in this slide deck and the video capturing the 3rd grade song.

Parent Coffee May 10
It was a pleasure to gather with parents on May 10 for our last parent coffee of the school year. We enjoyed playing Portledge Jeopardy and sharing our “stars” from this year and our “wishes” for next year.

5th Grade Spring Spectacular
Bravo, Bravo! Our 5th graders shined Thursday evening as they performed Beauty and the Beast for the Annual Portledge Spring Spectacular. They started preparing for this last December. They worked diligently to memorize lines, cues, and blocking. They collaborated, worked together, compromised and cheered one another on under the leadership of Mrs. Cavrell and Mr. Schwartz. The result was an impressive high-quality theater experience for all fortunate enough to attend. We are so proud of you, 5th Grade!

We would like to offer special thanks and gratitude to all the parents who donated materials, time, and energy to this production. We especially thank the Khalfan family for all their assistance with the scenery and props and Mrs. Maria Gray-Cohen for all her costume work. We thank all parents for making sure their individual child/children had beautiful costumes to wear for the play. The play is a wonderful example of our community all working together to achieve great things with our children.

Jewish American Heritage Month Assembly
On Friday, May 17 members of JSU led a presentation at a special Lower School assembly to celebrate Jewish-American identity and showcase the places in the world from which members of our Jewish community have immigrated.
