Portledge Arts Council Welcomes Alumna Speaker, Suzette Bishop ‘02

Kara Sweeney
The Portledge Arts Council was formed with the intent of enriching and growing the arts program for students at Portledge. The Council consists of alumni, parents, and faculty members, and meets regularly throughout the year to plan art-related events and outings.

Each year the Council invites an alumna/us to come back to campus and speak to the Middle School and Upper School students about her or his professional experience in the world of art. On February 3, we were honored to have Suzette Bishop ’02 speak to the students about her professional experience in the music industry in a Town Hall meeting.
Suzette explained music licensing and her role at Google Play and YouTube Music. Her presentation covered the many elements of the music recording industry and how songwriters, musicians, singers, and performers receive compensation for their work. She explained licensing permissions and how copyrighted material is protected, as well as the laws that are set in place for digital music that is uploaded and shared on sites such as YouTube.

The Portledge students were especially interested in the subject matter because of its relevance. They had many questions about how artists can protect their work and how to legally upload music. They also asked about Suzette’s musical background and the most famous recording artist she has ever met.

The Portledge Arts Council, as well as the faculty and students at Portledge, would like to thank Suzette Bishop ‘02 for her entertaining and informative presentation. It is always a pleasure to welcome back alums and equally important to connect current students with the alumni community.
