Upper School

Our upper school students combine academic curiosity and emotional intelligence to seek answers through critical thinking and problem-solving as they continue to gain knowledge through an ever-expanding global academic lens.

EXPLORE Academics

Welcome to the Portledge Upper School!

Through our rigorous academic program, our Upper Schoolers develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence to thrive at Portledge and beyond. It’s a place where our students’ achievement is rooted in the confidence that they know they will be prepared for college once they leave this beautiful and lush campus. In grades 9 through 12, our students begin to take responsibility for their own learning and education. Whether they’re taking part in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma program, or have developed a more customized program to suit their individual interests, our students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to thrive in this ever-changing world. Each student’s schedule includes dedicated Conference Time with teachers, in order to further solidify the content and skills taught during classroom time. With the help of our world-class teachers, students are set up to achieve and thrive, both here and beyond the walls of 355 Duck Pond Road.

Our Upper School is also a place where our students have the autonomy to choose their own path at Portledge and realize that this is about their journey as a scholar, artist, athlete, and community member. Portledge is a place where opportunity drives passion, and our students have a plethora of opportunities to pursue their extracurricular interests, whether in athletics, the performing arts, or any number of clubs that current students often create. You might have a passion for Robotics, Lacrosse, the Spring Musical, or all three! Portledge will help you pursue those interests with the help of advisors and coaches that share your passions.

Every student develops important relationships with both peers and adults at Portledge, and kindness is a pillar of our community. These relationships built on our pillars of kindness, honor, purpose, and respect are what make Portledge a warm and inclusive environment. Every Upper Schooler has an Advisor that they meet with daily to review the special activities of the day but also to make sure that each student is getting the most out of their time here. Each student also has a Dean to help them navigate their academic path, the student life opportunities that abound here, and the college admissions process.

The Portledge Upper School is a place where being known inspires growth. Students work best when they’re known and when they trust that their school is here to support them. Here at Portledge, each student has their own “team” to provide the individualized support they need to thrive.

We’re glad you’re here! I know you’ll agree that Portledge Upper School is a special place for adolescents to grow up.
Skills of critical thinking, creative problem solving, collaboration, and mastery of technology are evident in the lessons and visible in the classrooms. Traditional learning is combined with integrated projects, authentic assessments, and student-centered initiatives to prepare students for the challenges both in college and beyond.
