Portledge in the Now.

From Simon Owen-Williams, Head of School

I am thrilled to welcome you all to the 2023-2024 school year in just a few short weeks. As time passes, I find that each summer instills in me a renewed commitment to providing our new and returning students with the most rewarding academic and personal experiences possible.

The summer months often provide valuable and much-needed administrative thinking and planning time. Rich Fioto and our Maintenance team have completed several significant projects this summer. You will notice some beautiful enhancements to our quad between the Commons and the Upper School, and steady progress has been made on the Athletic & Wellness Center as well as the Middle School atrium and the facade of the Lower School building. The Admissions team has spent the summer ensuring a smooth start for our new families as we will again open at full enrollment, and the Administration has been meticulously preparing for the new school year.

As I share the many preparations taking place this summer, I must take a moment to recognize that our College Counseling team has been working diligently with the Class of 2024 as they begin their college admissions process. I want to share the following note that sums up our actions as a school regarding this decision from our Director of College Counseling, Karen Crowley, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Traci Douglas: “This work is particularly significant this season in light of the recent United States Supreme Court decision which struck down race-based affirmative action and race-conscious admissions processes at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, making it unconstitutional to consider race as a factor in admitting students into any and all colleges in the United States. As the College Counseling team has already conveyed to the families and students of the class of 2024, we remain committed to supporting all of our seniors and working closely with them to navigate a dynamic admissions landscape.”

While this decision has no jurisdiction over K-12 independent schools, at Portledge we remain committed to an admissions process that evaluates the whole child and fosters a warm, diverse, and inclusive community. We appreciate the value that each and every student brings to Portledge.

As you prepare for the start of school, I hope that you find the information on these pages helpful, as we aim to provide you and your family with all of the details you will need to start the school year. Dress codes, traffic flow directions, athletics updates, essential forms, new schedules, food programming, and more are all available on the myPortledge ’23 central page and each divisional myPortledge ’23 page. I ask that you carefully read through the main page and your divisional pages to capture all of the necessary information.

I am always energized by the exciting progress made over the summer for the upcoming academic year. I look forward to seeing you all soon, and I hope that you were able to rest, relax, and recharge for the beginning of our new school year.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Simon Owen-Williams
