Portledge in the Now.

Season Opener Recap

The Portledge Varsity Girls Ice Hockey team took to the ice against Greenwich Academy for their first game of the 2017-18 season. Unfortunately, the Lady Panthers were bested by a perennially strong Gators squad by a score of 3-0. After a back and forth beginning, the Portledge girls looked to have some momentum as they drew a penalty midway through the first frame. The Portledge power play struggled, however, and allowed Greenwich to open the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Soon after, Greenwich added a second tally, putting our girls in blue in a difficult 2-0 hole. It seemed as if Portledge was always one step behind the Greenwich girls as coaches Hills and Wade searched for chemistry within a group that has added a bunch of new talent. Sophomore Emma Hayes ‘20 looked good for Portledge as she registered six shots. Sophomore Anna Hamid ‘20 stopped 23 of 26 shots and looked solid between the pipes. The defense corps led by captain Grace Dima ‘18 and Shay Mahon ‘18, held their own against a very tough opponent, but struggled a bit in getting the puck out of the defensive zone. Hopefully, the Lady Panthers can use this game as a learning experience, as they continue through a tough stretch of early season non league games. The Varsity Girls Ice Hockey team next takes to the ice this Friday when they travel to the Millbrook School, and then they play their first game at Beaver Dam this season, when they take on Morristown Beard this coming Monday, December 4th at 5:30pm.
