BARCODE LONG ISLAND SYMPOSIUM at Cold Spring Harbor DNA Lab

Carolyn Chiu
On the evening of June 5th, Portledge 9th Grade students Michael Kashinsky, Leah Yakoby and Timothy Chiu presented their research at the Barcode Long Island Symposium at the DNA Laboratories in Cold Spring Harbor. They researched their topic, Barcoding of Aquatic and Terrestrial Invertebrates, by examining organisms at Youngs Farm in Old Brookville and at Coffin Pond in the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary, adjacent to the Portledge campus. Environmental sampling, DNA extraction and amplification, and bioinformatics were all utilized as their project proceeded.

The team found that the most common organism in Coffin Pond was isopods while in the field at Youngs Farm they found a variety of insects. One interesting result was the discovery of an invasive species - the dung fly - which is usually found in Europe.

The students presented their findings at the Symposium and even had the opportunity to meet Dr. Watson, the Noble Prize-winning scientist who, with scientist Francis Crick, determined the structure of DNA. Portledge Science teacher, Mrs. Chiu, was excited to have her students actually meet someone they had studied in Freshman Biology and says “it was great fun!”
