Student Clubs & Activities

A positive school culture improves educational outcomes for students and can have a profound impact on a student's overall success. All of our community members contribute to the creation of our culture, which helps Portledge have a sense of continuity, positive energy, and strong morale. Portledge aligns all non-academic offerings to create a wide range of choices that promote character development, enhance leadership opportunities, and encourage and maximize student participation throughout the school.

Please note that clubs run depending on student engagement and interest and club offerings change year by year.

  • Future Campers Fund Club

Our club’s mission is to support organizations like SCOPE by giving children the opportunity to attend summer camp, regardless of financial barriers. We work toward this purpose by organizing fundraisers such as bake sales to raise money for camp fundraising organizations. Also, we would do an activity, possibly in the middle or lower school, where the students can create handmade items like bracelets, with all proceeds dedicated to helping kids experience the joy, growth, and friendships of camp. Our club strengthens our school community while also making a positive impact on the greater community by opening doors for children to enjoy life-changing summer experiences.
  • Adaptive Sports Programs Club

The Portledge Adaptive Sports Program aims to educate students on the concepts of adaptive sports and make an impact in our community. We aim to support this cause by supporting and giving our services to organizations that support this mission. This program is about making an impact in our local community on those who need it. Students part of the Adaptive Sports Program will participate in community service, fundraisers, and field trips. This club was inspired by the work of the Adaptive Sports Foundation, and we aim to bring a piece of the wonderful work they do to Portledge.
  • Animal Aid Advocates

Our mission is to raise money and toys for dogs and cats. As well as nearby shelters. This is beneficial by supporting animals in need. To add on, we will have a box where people can drop off toys for said animals, and bake sales. This would benefit Portledge as it goes with the four pillars: kindness, honor, purpose, and respect. Another goal of ours is to bring service animals to Portledge while working with the student government.
  • APP Development Club

The purpose of the App Development Club is to teach students the skills and techniques needed to design and build mobile applications using Xcode. Club members work on hands-on projects, from coding apps to testing them, and ultimately publish their creations on the App Store. By learning these skills and sharing their apps, the club benefits the Portledge community and beyond by fostering creativity, technical knowledge, and tools that can be used for learning, productivity, or entertainment.
  • Artificial Intelligence Club

AI is already shaping how people learn, create, and solve problems, and our school deserves a calm, honest space to explore it together. Our mission is to make AI useful, ethical, and friendly for everyone. We will talk openly about bias, privacy, attribution, and academic integrity, align with the honor code, and practice transparency as a habit. We value curiosity with humility, test ideas, document what works, admit limits, and share what we learn. Success for us looks like classmates feeling less intimidated, work that’s clearer and more original, and a community where beginners and experienced students teach each other. Everyone is welcome; no experience required, just questions, kindness, and a willingness to build something small each week.
  • Asian Student Association

The Asian American Association at Portledge endeavors to celebrate and inform others about Asian culture, accomplishments, and the sociopolitical issues that Asians and Asian Americans have to face. The Asian American Association aspires to help students develop into future leaders who are not afraid to voice their opinions or express their ideas on the present issues in today’s society. Overall, the Asian American Association will be a welcoming and safe space for all who aim to spread awareness on Asian culture and help address the political and social obstacles that Asian students are forced to overcome.
  • Beautification Club

The Beautification Club is dedicated to enhancing our school's environment and fostering a sense of community through creative and impactful initiatives. • Business Club

The Portledge Business Club is a student-run association that has many activities to keep members engaged and educated. This includes guest speakers and field trips to places such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Freedom Tower, and many other venues. We discuss current financial markets, business conditions, as well as global politics. The Business Club created the Business Club Investment Fund which has its own constitution and bylaws. The fund invests in actual stocks and currently has nearly $30,000 in investments. Stocks are selected by students, who must first make formal proposals in front of a board of trustees that oversees the club’s financial decisions. These trustees are generally Wall Street investors or bankers. The club has an annual Business Club dinner where they invite esteemed guest speakers to discuss important financial topics or real-world business trends. The preparation of all events/trips/guest speakers is handled by the club members themselves, not the faculty. This is a key trademark of the club: all activities are student-managed. This helps them become the business leaders of the future.

Our club strives to foster an inclusive and diverse space for conversations ranging from all fields of contemporary discourse (geopolitics, social issues, philosophy, etc.) with the intent of promoting mutual understanding and bridging divides across spectrums of thought. The Creative Writing club is a space where students who share love stories, poems, and writing can come together to connect and share ideas. Whether you’re an experienced writer or just curious about trying new things, this club offers a supportive environment where creativity is encouraged and celebrated. Our goal is to build a community where students feel safe in exploring who they are through their unique writing styles, and we want to give students the time and tools to explore their imagination through these differences. Each week, we will come together for the club period and will begin with a quick warm-up prompt or writing challenge to spark inspiration. Members will dive into different activities, including short writing sprints, collaborative games like “pass the story”, blackout poetry, or genre challenges like fairytale tellings. We also dedicate time for members to share pieces they’ve written. While always optional, our club values maintaining a safe space where every voice is heard. In addition to building a community and confidence with self-expression, our club also works on larger projects. Beyond the weekly (every other) meetings, the club may explore community outreach and show how creativity can spread kindness.

Amigos also aims to teach students from other ethnic backgrounds more about various types of Hispanic culture. In Amigos, we will also raise funds through events and activities. • Mock Trial Competition Team

Mock Trial, sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and the Nassau Bar Association, is a highly competitive academic activity closely aligned with the Portledge School Mission, Philosophy, and Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.

Students from across New York come together to learn advanced legal concepts in ethics, civility, and professionalism, enhancing their reasoning skills for use in an increasingly complex world. This co-curricular activity serves students in ninth through twelfth grades, immersing them in courtroom procedures such as raising objections, entering evidence, and impeaching witnesses, as well as writing direct and cross-examination questions.

Mock Trial is rigorous, requiring students to hone their critical thinking skills as they argue both sides of a fictitious case in a courtroom setting. As students compete against other schools, they gain a unique opportunity to engage in a diverse, inclusive activity while practicing accountability, self-discipline, and cooperation. Though Portledge emphasizes winning, the primary focus remains on the intellectual and personal growth gained through participation. Students who demonstrate dedication and teamwork perform roles live at the Supreme Courthouse in Mineola.

Participation in Mock Trial enhances students' listening, speaking, reading, writing, and reasoning skills, providing invaluable insights into the legal system that benefits their college experiences, careers, and broader lives.

We would also like to have a few club members show their Portledge Pride and perform at some school events! This club is necessary to the Portledge community because I've noticed a lack of cultural representation through an artistic medium. It's also beneficial to the Portledge community because we only have music CLASSES, not music CLUBS. We will explore issues facing women today and create opportunities for change. We will highlight role models and show that women can thrive in every field, from STEM to business, the arts, and athletics, while also inviting women speakers to share their journeys and inspire future leaders.

The Women’s Empowerment Club strengthens the Portledge community by giving young women a place to feel heard, supported, and empowered to lead. By encouraging members to take initiative and work together, the club builds a community based on respect and collaboration. Through mentoring younger members and middle school students, leading projects and workshops, and sharing experiences, members build lasting confidence. What begins in the club reaches further, as members bring their leadership and confidence into the world.
