Our program offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum that promotes critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and global awareness in students.

EXPLORE Academics

Portledge School is an authorized IB World school, receiving accreditation for the Primary Years Programme in the spring of 2025. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education that Portledge School believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org.

PYP Programme

PYP Spotlight

This interdisciplinary mindset starts early. As an authorized Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, we are actively implementing IB’s approaches to learning from the earliest years. Whether exploring storytelling through science in Lower School or tackling projects in Middle School, our students engage across subjects to build curiosity and connections that prepare them for success in the Diploma Programme.

We've seen firsthand how the PYP has enriched our curriculum, deepened student engagement, and empowered our educators to create dynamic learning environments. Our students have excelled in demonstrating the PYP learner attributes as they explore and connect their learning across all subjects.

Programme of Inquiry

List of 3 frequently asked questions.

  • The Learner Profile

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme established a list of ten learner attributes that are designed to foster well-rounded, global-minded learners. The ten Learner Profile attributes are:
    • Inquirers
    • Knowledgeable
    • Thinkers
    • Communicators
    • Principled
    • Open-Minded
    • Caring
    • Risk-Takers
    • Balanced
    • Reflective.
  • What Does It Mean to Be an Inquirer?

In the PYP, we believe in nurturing inquisitive minds. An inquirer is a student who demonstrates a natural curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. They are not afraid to ask questions and seek answers, always eager to explore the world around them.
  • Living It in Real Life

Encouraging our students to be inquirers isn't just about classroom learning; it's a way of life. At home, parents can support this attribute by:
    • Encouraging their child's questions and providing opportunities for exploration.
    • Visiting libraries, museums, and nature reserves to stimulate curiosity.
    • Engaging in conversations about current events and the world, fostering critical thinking.
By nurturing the inquirer within, we help our children become lifelong learners, constantly seeking to understand and make sense of the world.

We would love to hear how your child has exemplified this attribute at home! Please share your stories with PYP Coordinator, Colleen Burke at cburke@portledge.org to inspire our school community!
