Early Childhood Happenings Apr. 7th

Solar Eclipse on April 8th, 2024
On Monday, April 8th, we will experience the solar eclipse on Long Island. What a unique and special opportunity. To prepare for the event, we will do some mini-lessons related to the solar eclipse. On the day of the event, we are planning an afternoon special assembly for students during which we will learn some facts about the solar eclipse and read a book about solar eclipse. The height of the eclipse is scheduled to take place during dismissal. We will dismiss EC students (and siblings) from the cafeteria and require that they wear their safety glasses to go to their car. After 3:30 Club and After School Adventures Soccer will take place indoors.

Parent Teacher Conferences
The teachers look forward to meeting with you during Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday, April 8th, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. (virtually only), and on Tuesday, April 9th, from 8:00-4:00 p.m. (in person or virtually). Pre-nursery should sign up for conferences using the form emailed by Mrs. Rowe. Please email your child’s homeroom teacher if you have not scheduled an appointment. If you would like to schedule a conference with a specialist teacher or another teacher your child may have, please email them to make an appointment.

Last Day of School Information
The last day of school for Lower School will be on Thursday, June 13th. Dismissal will be at 11:30 a.m., and bus transportation will not be available.

Save the date: Morning of Reflections, April 25th
We invite you to join your child and the EC community on Thursday, April 25th starting at 8:45 a.m. for our traditional Morning of Reflections. This is an event designed to celebrate the culmination of the year’s learning and student-centered projects. Parents/friends will participate with the children in activities that reflect their studies. We hope you can join us.

Reminders Regarding Snacks/Food
Below you will find a reminder from the Portledge Handbook regarding snacks and food at Portledge, and ask that you read it carefully so that we can best prevent any complications for students who may have allergies:

Lunch and Snack
FLIK, our food service provider, supplies a healthy daily selection of nutritious lunch choices for all children from nursery through fifth grade. Our chef also provides a healthy snack for all children each day. We discourage families from sending in their own snack, unless discussed with the teacher, to avoid complications due to allergies in the class.

Life-threatening Allergies
For the protection of the growing number of Portledge students with serious peanut/tree-nut allergies, we do not serve peanut butter or nut products in our cafeterias. While other foods - for example, dairy products or seafood - can also cause life-threatening allergic reactions, nuts present a special problem for two reasons: they are the most common culprit in severe food allergies, and they are an oily substance, which makes those allergens especially transferable. To ensure the safety of our students, all outside food should be nut-free. Absolutely no baked goods containing nuts or processed in a plant with nuts may be brought on campus, including birthday or celebration treats. All food items brought to school should have an ingredient label attached.
