Connecting with History: Portledge Students Experience Holocaust Remembrance Day

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, our Eighth Grade students visited the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center for a deeply meaningful learning experience.
Being there on such an important day allowed students to engage with history in a personal and impactful way, deepening their understanding of one of history’s most tragic chapters.

Students explored updated exhibits that combined historical context with interactive, thought-provoking displays, reflecting on the human impact behind the events. Their attentiveness, curiosity, and respect demonstrated the maturity with which they approached the experience.

A defining moment came when students had the rare opportunity to hear from Mr. Woolf, a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor. His firsthand testimony brought history to life. Students listened intently, asked thoughtful questions, and many personally thanked him, showing their appreciation and understanding of his story.

Students left with a profound awareness of the importance of remembrance and the rarity of hearing firsthand testimony from survivors. After returning from their trip, students sent thank-you notes and letters to Mr. Woolf reflecting upon the impact of their visit. We are incredibly proud of their curiosity, respect, and engagement, which made this experience so meaningful.
