PORTLEDGE ROBOTICS TEAMS GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Portledge School is proud to announce that the Robotics programs in both the Middle and Upper Schools are building on past successes to score some recent big wins!

The current Middle School Robotics program was restarted in spring 2019 as a once-a-week club block, and then in the 2019 - 2020 academic year as both an in-school club block and an After School Adventures team, both run by Maria Zografos and supported by Joel Friedman and Vicky Cohen, all of whom are Portledge parents. The Middle School program has sparked interest and provided a solid foundation for students who want to pursue technology literacy skills, computer science, and physical computing. Most recently, our Middle School FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team earned the Champion's Award at the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Qualifier, held on February 8, 2020, at Mineola High School, NY. The Champions award, "...recognizes a team that embodies the FIRST LEGO League experience, by fully embracing our Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the Robot Game and Project."
Our two Upper School robotics teams, Portledge Varsity Robotics (7417) and Portledge “Hit the Switch!” (8818), recently participated in a FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics qualifier with great results. Team 7417 went 5-0 during qualification matches, becoming the second-ranked team and earning a spot as an alliance captain. Team 8818 went 3-2 during the qualification matches and was picked to join the third-ranked alliance captain to advance to the semifinals. Team 7417’s alliance defeated Team 8818’s alliance in the semifinals and went on to win the entire competition! This is the second year in a row that one of our Portledge teams has achieved this. Team 7417 will now compete in the Long Island Championships taking place on March 7th at Syosset High School.
