PYP Update, February 18th, 2024

Welcome back to the PYP Corner! In this edition, we examine one of the fundamental Learner Profile attributes of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) – being “balanced.” As we nurture the holistic development of our students, fostering a sense of balance in their lives is essential to their well-being and success.
What Does It Mean to Be Balanced?

To be balanced in the PYP is to strive for harmony in all aspects of life—physical, emotional, social, and intellectual. It involves recognizing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing one's emotions, and seeking a comfortable balance between academic and extracurricular activities.

Living It In Real Life

Encouraging our students to be balanced isn't just about classroom learning; it's a way of life. At home, parents can support this attribute by:

  • Establishing routines. Maintain a consistent daily routine that includes time for academics, play, relaxation, and family bonding. A well-balanced schedule helps children feel secure and organized.
  • Promoting healthy habits. Encourage healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. Model a balanced lifestyle by prioritizing your own well-being and demonstrating the importance of self-care.
  • Encouraging mindfulness. Practice mindfulness activities such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation to help children develop self-awareness and emotional regulation skills. Ask your child what mindfulness tips they have learned in school!
  • Supporting extracurricular activities. Encourage participation in a variety of extracurricular activities that cater to different interests and talents. Balance academics with sports, arts, music, or community involvement.
  • Teaching time management. Help children learn effective time management skills by breaking tasks into manageable steps and prioritizing activities. Encourage them to set goals and plan their time accordingly.

By incorporating these practices into family life, parents can help their children develop a balanced approach to living and learning.

We would love to hear how your child has exemplified this attribute at home! Please share your stories with PYP Coordinator Colleen Burke at cburke@portledge.org to inspire our school community!

*PYP Spotlight: Tapping Into Nature’s Balance*

In this edition's spotlight, we celebrate an extraordinary hands-on experience that embodies the essence of balance- our students' exploration of tapping maple trees to make our very own maple syrup. Through this immersive activity, students not only learned about the natural world but also grappled with the delicate balance between human needs and environmental stewardship.

Under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Van Pelt and our dedicated teachers, our students embarked on a journey into the ancient art of maple syrup production. Students watched in awe as Mr. Van Pelt demonstrated the step-by-step process of finding a maple tree and how to collect sap safely. From the moment we tapped, the sap came running out. Students were overjoyed to see such immediate success. In just two days, the Van Pelts were able to collect almost 3 gallons of sap! Freddy (3rd grade), Dahlia (1st grade) and Heidi (Nursery) created an instructional video for the Portledge Community demonstrating how they transformed our 3 gallons into tasty syrup! A huge thank you to all of the Van Pelts for giving us this amazing firsthand experience and sharing the intricate process that sustains this cherished Portledge tradition.

What makes this experience truly remarkable is the thoughtful consideration our students gave to the delicate balance between human needs and nature's balance. As they engaged in the syrup-making process, they reflected on the importance of sustainable practices and the need to preserve our natural resources for future generations.

Through this immersive activity, our students gained valuable insights into the concepts of stewardship and sustainability. They learned that while it's important to meet our basic needs, it's equally crucial to do so in a way that respects and preserves the delicate balance of the natural world.

As we celebrate our students' exploration of balance, we are reminded of the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship with ourselves, each other, and the world around us. May their experiences serve as a guiding light as we continue our journey toward a more balanced and sustainable future.

Stay tuned for more insights into the dynamic world of the PYP at Portledge. If you have a story to share or would like to nominate a student for the PYP Spotlight in the future, please email PYP Coordinator Colleen Burke at cburke@portledge.org.

Until next time, here's to the balanced and harmonious learning experiences of our students!
