Portledge in the Now.

National Day of Giving at Portledge

Today, Nov. 27 is National Giving Day, otherwise known as Giving Tuesday, and to honor that we are giving praise to the work of our Portledge Student Council. Together they have organized charity drives that serve to benefit those less fortunate, especially during this holiday season.
On Thursday, Nov. 15 we loaded a truck full of boxes containing non-perishable food items all donated by members of the Portledge community to Island Harvest. Students, families, faculty, and staff all worked together in an effort to raise donations for this holiday season. The Student Council set up collection bins in almost every building on campus. We were able to raise 2,364 lbs worth of food to donate! Island Harvest serves as Long Island's largest hunger relief organization. "Our volunteers and staff now deliver millions of pounds of good, surplus food – much of which might otherwise go to waste – to a network of 570 Long Island-based food pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organization that offer feeding services for those in need." Such acts of kindness do not go unnoticed as each one helps in Island Harvest's mission to end hunger and food waste on Long Island.

The next upcoming drives are for toys and winter coats/accessories. The winter coat/accessory drive is in partnership with Long Island Cares and will run from Nov. 26 - Dec. 21. All the toys donated will go to The Matthew Fetzer Foundation in support of children battling cancer as well as their families. The holidays are a time of giving, and we here at Portledge are very proud and eager to do just that.
