Portledge in the Now.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026

Simon Owen-Williams
As another remarkable school year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on how much we have accomplished together. The saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun,” and this year certainly seemed to move at lightning speed. Perhaps that is because it was filled with so many moments worth celebrating.

Our year concluded by honoring the extraordinary Class of 2026. This thoughtful, talented, and deeply engaged group leaves behind a legacy that will be felt for years to come. As they step into their new role as Portledge alumni, I am reminded of two reflections shared by members of the class during their final days on campus.

At the Senior Dinner, Nia G. described Portledge as "more than a school... a second home built out of care, patience, and a love so steady that it outlasts every grade we've received, every mistake we've made, and every hardship we've carried quietly." Similarly, Senior Athlete Award recipient Kennedy Abrahams reflected on Portledge as "something bigger than yourself... something that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Together, their words capture what makes this community so special. Whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the field, or through the many opportunities they embraced, these students have grown into confident, compassionate young adults who embody the values of Portledge. They have taken risks, discovered their passions, found their voices, and built relationships that will endure long after graduation. It was an honor to celebrate all they have contributed to our community, and we send them off with immense pride, gratitude, and our very best wishes for the future.

This year, we launched our new Strategic Plan, Forging Pathways to Excellence, establishing a bold vision for Portledge's future. We welcomed one of the largest groups of new students in school history, celebrated success in athletics, robotics, the arts, and academics, and gathered as a community to support the school's future at our Raising the Stakes Gala. Throughout it all, our students, faculty, staff, and families continued to demonstrate the values that define Portledge: Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.

As we celebrate our students, we also recognize an important transition within our community. After 12 years of dedicated service as Lower School Director, Saralyn Lawn will step away from her leadership role. Her impact on generations of students, families, and faculty cannot be overstated. We are deeply grateful for her leadership and friendship, and we wish her every happiness in this next chapter. Thankfully, Saralyn will continue supporting Portledge remotely next year as we welcome new Lower School Director Lauren Domaradzki.

We will also bid farewell to longtime faculty member John Greene, who is retiring after more than two decades at Portledge. As a talented visual arts teacher and Chair of the Visual Arts Department, John has inspired generations of Middle and Upper School students while expanding and strengthening the Upper School arts program. Beyond the classroom, he coached championship teams, performed with the Faculty Band, and was a familiar presence at countless games, concerts, and productions. John embodies the spirit of a true community member, one who consistently goes above and beyond in support of students and colleagues alike. He will be greatly missed!

Looking ahead, summer will be a busy and exciting time on campus as we undertake the largest facilities investment in school history, with improvements planned for Wellington Gym, the Middle School Atrium, the Lower School gym, and the Gilmour Library. These projects reflect our continued investment in exceptional learning environments for our students.

As we close the year, please join me in celebrating our rising sixth and ninth graders, our graduating seniors, and every student whose growth, effort, and accomplishments made this year so special.
To our parents and families, thank you for your partnership, trust, and support. The strength of the Portledge community comes from the collective commitment of everyone who believes in our mission.
For now, though, it is time for summer. I encourage our students to spend time exploring new interests, reading great books, enjoying family and friends, and recharging for the year ahead. Growth requires both effort and rest, and I hope this summer provides plenty of opportunities for both.

Thank you for an exceptional year. I wish you and your families a joyful, relaxing, and restorative summer, and I look forward to welcoming you back in the fall.
